(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The new Muttrah Fish Market will have a soft opening next week. It will also have stalls to sell fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry products, and a coffee shop.
Civil works are almost over and finishing touches are being given before the opening. A grand opening will take place sometime in the future.
The new fish market will be a great boost to the local economy and will become a good tourist destination as it is located near Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ). It is expected to attract lots of cruise tourists in the coming season.
Unlike the present market which is small and has minimum facilities, the new one is air-conditioned, well-equipped and spacious. It will have enough parking space. Along with other facilities, the fish market has been constructed keeping the public health and high standards of hygiene in mind, sources said.
Asfiya Khan, a regular buyer of fish from the present Muttrah fish market, said, 'Fresh fish is available only in the morning hours as the existing market doesn't have cold storage facilities. We are all eagerly waiting for the new market to open. I hope fish is available in the evenings too.'
Patro K, another buyer said, 'Muttrah is known all over the country for its iconic souq and fish market. I live in Al Khuwayr but I do buy fish from the market whenever I get time in the morning hours. Fresh fish is available in supermarkets too but nothing can match those available at the Muttrah market.'
Earlier this year, Muscat Municipality had signed an agreement with Al Dana for the operation of the new fish market for five years. The agreement was signed by H E Mohsin bin Mohammed bin Ali al Sheikh, chairman of Muscat Municipality, and Nader Mohsen Rajab, chairman of Al Dana.
