A 17-year-old boy who was found hanging from a drainage pipe in a housing estate in Sau Mau Ping, Kowloon, on Monday was a suspect in an attempted rape that occurred on the weekend, Hong Kong police said.

At 5:30am, the boy was found dead in an unlocked pipe room on the ground floor of Tat Yi House of Po Tat Estate after police raided his apartment in the same building, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Police said they believed the boy could have been responsible for the attempted rape of a 19-year-old woman while she was jogging at Shun Tin Estate in Ngau Tau Kok at around 2am on Saturday.

According to police, the attacker grabbed the woman's neck and dragged her to a corner of a building's yard. He put a shopping bag over her head and attempted to assault her sexually. The victim struggled and bit the attacker's right hand, prompting him to flee.

Acting Superintendent Yin Hiu-yu said police officers found a bite wound on the dead boy's right hand, adding that a backpack and a recycling bag in his apartment resembled one carried by the attacker, Apple Daily reported.

A T-shirt and shorts found in his room also fit the description of those the attacker was wearing at the time of the attempted rape.

The Kowloon East regional crime unit is handling the case.

This is the third suspect in a sexual-assault case to have hanged himself in the past three months.

In July, a man on remand over an alleged rape died after hanging himself at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. In May, a man who was also suspected of rape was found hanging in a cell at Sau Mau Ping Police Station.
