Australia raises security alert due to foiled terrorist attack

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (KUNA) -- The Australian Federal Police (AFP) beefed up security measures in the country's airports after thwarting a terrorist attack targeting an aircraft.

"Law enforcement agencies received information of a group plotting for a terrorist attack in Sydney, using an explosive device," AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said in a press conference with the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier today.

"We believe that this terrorist attack is out of Islamist's inspiration, and we need a comprehensive investigation in order to find out all the related details," Turnbull said.

"We do not have enough information regarding the attack, but the information we have indicates that it is targeting the aviation industry," he affirmed.

The Australian Police inspected five houses in Sydney suburbs yesterday, and arrested four suspects.

Strengthening security measures started last Thursday in Sydney Airport, while other international and local airports started from last Saturday, after consultations with the security and intelligence bodies, the Premier said.

"Some of those measures will be obvious to the public, while others might not be," he noted.

The Australian Department of Immigration indicated that 100,000 people departed the country for fighting in Syria with terrorist groups like the so-called Islamic State. (end) aab.lb
