Tourism reporting is better and more positive now. This is definitely the outcome of the tourism fellowships for journalists.
He said this while addressing Tourism Fellowship 2017 awarding ceremony at a function at Jatiya Press Club in the city on July 30.
Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) in association with Aviation and Tourism Journalists' Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) organised the ceremony to award fellowships to 10 journalists from print, electronic and online media on the day.
This is the fourth time that BTB and ATJFB had organised such a fellowship to enhance the understanding of aviation and tourism and improve the standard of reporting.
The minister felt that had the government taken up mega projects in this sector, as in other sectors, the country would have witnessed massive developments in tourism sector as lack of investments in the sector is acting as a deterrent to its growth.
Dr Nasir Uddin, CEO, Bangladesh Tourism Board said, BTB was developing ecotourism and community based tourism with a view to attain growth of sustainable tourism. The organisation also trained 700 hospitality personnel from several divisions of the country recently.
Kazi Wahidul Alam, Editor, The Bangladesh Monitor, emphasised on arranging B2B exhibitions to imbue foreign tourists to visit Bangladesh. Mentioning that seeing is believing, he said the arrivals of foreign tour operators as well as travel writers would help increase flow of tourists to Bangladesh.
The function was also addressed by Muhammad Imran, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Nikhil Ranjan Roy, Director, BTB, and moderated by Nadira Kiron, President, ATJFB.
Tanjim Anwar, General Secretary, ATJFB presented the opening remarks explaining how the fellowships are awarded. he said the number of applicants is increasing every year and this year they have received 26 applications for the fellowship.
The fellowship winners' reports are: Tareque Moretaza's 'Dark Tourism Beckons' and 'Increasing football may spell doom for St Martin's Island;' Sohel Hosain Patwary's 'Govt to build 4 tourism EZs in Cox's Bazar, Sylhet,' Storytellers needed at heritage sites;' Ishtiaq Husain's 'Tourism industry thrives on seminars, conventions' and 'What is a five-star hotel in Bangladesh?;' Manjurul Islam's 'No correct statistics: Tourism board hopes to publish statistics from next fiscal year' and 'Community tourism: Grassroots people being associated with tourism development'; Safiullah Suman's 'Community tourism: Will change country's economy' and 'MICE tourism: New door of Tourism,' Rita Nahar's 'Halal tourism: Perspective Bangladesh' and 'Statistics urgent: Of foreign tourists,' Julhas Kabir's 'Future of adventure tourism in country' and 'Prospects of riverine tourism;' Niamul Sadek's 'Sustainable tourism will enrich country's economy' and 'Publicity needed for tourism sector growth;' Safik Bin Saad's 'Weak branding hampers tourism growth' and Tourism sector: Academic education fails to create skilled personnel;' Chowdhury Akbar's 'Prospects of adventure tourism in Bangladesh: and 'Tourism board will go ahead with new products to meet the challenge.
