(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, July 26 (KUNA) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II Wednesday stressed the importance of continuing concerted efforts to bring the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque back to what it was before the outbreak of the ongoing crisis.
The Jordanian King made the remark during a phone call with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the current situation in Jerusalem, Jordan's Petra news agency reported.
Also during the phone conversation, King Abdullah II emphasized that it was necessary to ensure that the historical and legal status of the holy site is respected, Petra added.
Jordan is the guardian of Islamic and Christian holy places, by tradition and by the 1994 peace treaty with Israel.
Last week, Israel shut down A-Aqsa Mosque, denying Palestinian worshipers access to the holy site, in the aftermath of clashes that erupted between three Palestinians and two Israelis, which resulted in killing all five.
It was the first time for Israel to take such a measure at Al-Aqsa Mosque in 48 years. (end) mjb.mt
