Qatar's para athletes return to grand welcome


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar's para athletics team arrived in Doha yesterday after participating in the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships concluded in London on July 23.
The event brought together more than 1,100 athletes from 95 countries. Abdulrahman Abdulqader won the gold medal of Men's Shot Put (F34) event while Sarah Masoud claimed the silver medal of Women's Shot Put (F33).
Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman al-Kuwari, QOC Deputy Secretary General Jassim Rashid al-Buenain and other members of the Qatar Paralympic Committee received the delegation at Hamad International Airport.
QOC Secretary General Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman al-Kuwari lauded the achievements accomplished by Qatar's Abdulrahman Abdulqader and Sarah Masoud and stressed that their results reflect the development of Para Athletics in the state of Qatar.
He added that HE QOC President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, through a telephone call, was among the first to congratulate Abdulrahman Abdulqader after winning the gold medal, a matter which encourages him and the rest of his colleagues to do more in the upcoming tournaments.
For his part, Abdulrahman Abdulqader expressed his happiness with winning the gold medal in the world championship, adding that the gold medal was the result of his meticulous training.
'After my silver medal at the Rio Olympics I continued to put in some hard work. I succeeded in achieving what I was aspiring to achieve, he said.
Sarah Masoud dedicated her achievement to HE QOC President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani and said that she was proud to raise the flag of Qatar in the world championship and achieve the silver medal. She hoped to achieve more medals in the upcoming events.
The Qatari delegation participating in the Para athletics Championships in London was led by Dr Hassan al-Ansari, Secretary General of the Qatar Paralympic Committee. The Qatari squad included Abdulrahman Abdulqader, Nasser al-Sahoti, Mohamed al-Kubaisi, Khaled al-Hajri, Mohamed Khallas and Sarah Masoud.
