Serving Asheville Safely: A Beer City USA Balancing Act

(MENAFNEditorial) Asheville, North Carolina - Branded as 'Beer City, USA, Asheville is home to more breweries than any other city in the United States, per capita. This has created an influx of tourism dollars for the state but also increased the DWI conviction rates as well as drug and alcohol facilitated sexual assault crimes. Lakota R. Denton, a personal injury attorney, is committed to helping the community remain safe for residents and tourists by raising awareness about the issue.

Lakota R. Denton spearheaded the 'Serve Safe, Drink Safe, Do the Right Thing campaign. 'We've all heard stories of someone getting hurt or even getting killed because of a drunk driver, and most people, rightly so, blame the drunk driver for their behavior. But most people don't realize that the bar and the bartender of that person also has an obligation not to over serve people, said Lakota R. Denton. 'Over consumption is the big beast, that's the one we work the hardest to try to change, said Al Bottego, a chief law enforcement officer at ABC Board in Asheville NC.

The campaign is in partnership and collaboration with the Asheville ABC board. The launch of the campaign was accompanied by a documentary style video that showed the hazardous effects when bars and bartenders serve beer to customers with no limit whatsoever. Having a few alcoholic drinks is one way for friends, families, and colleagues to have a great time; however, there is also a dark side to it. Studies show that 80 percent of sexual and domestic violence cases involve the consumption of alcohol.

The Serve Safe, Drink Safe, Do the Right Thing campaign aims to provide awareness to the Asheville community, specifically to establishments that serve alcohol that they share a responsibility to solve the issue. It also provides them the opportunity to be leaders and take care of their customers. Having a campaign such as this will not only improve their quality of life but also help keep Asheville safe for everyone.
