The Public Works Authority, Ashghal, has completed the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in the northern part of New Slata, covering an area of 1.72 square kilometres with 86 streets totalling 15.38km.
Located in Area 40 of Doha Municipality, the project includes 633 plots including 574 built ones, 14 under construction, and 45 vacant.
The project also has four schools, a kindergarten, five mosques and around 70 commercial buildings. The development of roads will significantly facilitate the access of New Slata's residents and visitors to the main streets surrounding the area, namely Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, D-Ring Road and Salwa Road. The project also provides a solution to rainwater flooding during heavy rains.
With completion of the project, all 86 streets were opened to traffic. The streets were redesigned, reconstructed, and paved. In order to enhance traffic safety in the area, many signboards and speed bumps were installed to reduce speed to maintain safety of road users, in addition to installing 659 light poles with energy saving LED luminaries, providing pedestrian paths and road markings, and constructing 2,800 car parking slots.
The project also included developing the area's infrastructure according to the highest standards, including the construction of 21km of surface and groundwater drainage networks, which will eliminate the rainwater flooding problem, constructing the 4.7 km extension of the existing Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) network, in addition to connecting all plots in the area with the 1.12 km drainage network that was developed as part of the project.
In an effort to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, Ashghal used distinctive designs in the interlock structure on sidewalks and allocated places to plant trees and plants in the area, improving the daily routine of the residents.
The project also included the development of utilities networks, including about 3 km of electricity lines, as well as the provision of water and communications lines, which will serve the future requirements of the area.
During the implementation period, the Public Works Authority took several safety measures at the project site and was keen to minimise the impact of construction works on the residents and visitors of the area, including the use of micro-tunneling technique instead of deep open excavations, installation of safety barriers and signs at work sites and excavations to provide information on alternative routes, as well as maintaining and cleaning the diversion roads continuously during the project period.
In addition, Ashghal communicated continuously with the area residents to keep them informed with the project details and traffic diversions being implemented, and to answer their inquiries and needs within the shortest possible time through the project engineers who were on site 24 hours a day throughout the whole construction period. Roads were also opened to traffic as soon as work was completed to ease congestion in the area.
As part of its commitment to implementing its work zone safety objectives, Ashghal and 'Al Mohanna Trading and Contracting and 'Puentes Joint Venture, the project contractor, achieved 4.1 million man-hours without any lost time incident (LTI).
This achievement is a reflection of the authority's keenness to adhere to the highest safety standards in work areas through imposing a set of safety procedures on all contractors implementing their projects, in order to protect project workers and road users from injuries caused by work hazards during the project implementation period.
