Qatar working on more flexible media law

Qatar is working towards implementing a more flexible media law. The Government Communications Office is working on the establishment of a media hub in the country, with more details to be announced soon, said H E Saif bin Ahmed Al Thani, Director, Government Communications Office (GCO).
He disclosed the information while speaking at a panel discussion on ‘Old and New Media in the GCC Dispute' during the ‘Qatar Social', an event which brought together the wider digital media community recently with an aim to collaborate, discuss and support new formats of content creation. The event was organised by I Love Qatar Network (ILQ).
'Qatar's citizens and its residents care deeply about the current political crisis so it was great to be given the opportunity to provide some insight and explain some of the measures being taken by the government, said Al Thani.
The panel discussion focused on the impact of fake news in the ongoing GCC dispute, the power of social media in global crises, and the importance of instant communication in fast-moving events in terms of how social media affects public opinion.
Also Dima Khatib, Managing Director of AJ+ and Elizabeth Linder, Founder and CEO of The Conversational Century also participated in the panel discussion. 'The event was a great success. The statement about the new changes to be made in the media law was revealed at the event. It is definitely a good news, Khalifa Saleh Al Haroon, Founder and CEO of ILQ, told The Peninsula.
'If a media hub is established in Qatar it will definitely help local companies to partner up with international organizations. It will also getting advertisements which will help to generate revenues for the digital media organisations to function, he added.
The first of its kind event held in Qatar brought together more than 200 digital and social media experts, startups, panelists, bloggers, Instagrammers, YouTubers as well as experts and officials at the Al Riwaq Gallery of Qatar Museums on Friday. Qatar Social provided a platform for effective dialogue and discussion related to the impact of digital media on traditional methods of information gathering.
'This is the first time this kind of a gathering was organised in Qatar. It is mainly aimed at fostering dialogue, bring together the talent in the country and provide an opportunity for networking, said Al Haroon.
