Video: Moroccan Runner Breaks 400m World Record to Win Gold at World Para Athletics


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – Moroccan athlete Mohamed Amguoun ran the T13 400m race in 46.92 seconds at the World Para Athletics on Sunday, breaking the previous world record and winning a gold medal.

The 28-year old beat the previous world record of 47.16 seconds, which he himself made in Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in September 2016.

In the race on Friday, Namibian Johannes Nambala came second with a time of 48.40 seconds and Mohamed Fouad Hamoumou came third with 48.65 seconds. Fellow Moroccan Nabil Rahhali Omari came fourth with 49.12 seconds.

Athletes competing in T13 sports events have the "least severe visual impairment eligible for IPC Athletics," according to . They have "the highest visual acuity and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees radius."

Moroccan athletes taking part in the World Para Athletics in London from July 14 to 23 have now won five gold medals. In the men's races, Amguoun also won 400m (T13), Youssef Benibrahim won 5000m (T13) and broke the world record, and Mahdi Afri won both 400m (T12), and 200m (T12). In the women's races, Sanaa Benhama won 1500m (T13) and scored silver in the 400m (T13).
