(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Urban Planning Council (SUPC) has announced the launch of the University City Road Enhancement Project.
The project will also transform the land area in front of the existing businesses on University City Road, starting from Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road to University City, into a modern, well organised, useable and sustainable public realm.
The newly revamped space will feature wide sidewalks, cafes, landscaping with native flora species, and a bike path, all to aid exercise and outdoor activities for residents. High-quality materials will be used, marking a change in the way Sharjah implements future public infrastructure improvements.
International best practices will also be followed for drainage systems, roads, lighting, parking lots, and green areas.
The civic infrastructure improvement project is in collaboration with the Sharjah Road & Transport Authority. The project is also in line with the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, aligned with Sheikh Sultan's directives for the emirate's sustainable development and a world-class urban planning system.
Sharjah has been moving towards world-class infrastructure growth to accelerate economic development and accommodate different segments of society, ?with public utilities, community amenities and natural landscapes matching international standards.
Sheikh Khalid Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, chairman of Sharjah Urban Planning Council (SUPC), said the project will strengthen the emirate's position as a livable, sustainable and environmentally conscious city. "The project is part of a series of civic improvement projects being executed by the SUPC as part of its comprehensive strategic planning to ensure sustainable development coupled with social, urban and economic integrity at all levels," Sheikh Khalid added.
Khalid Al Ali, SUPC secretary general, explained that the project will extend almost 3km, encompassing around 52,000 square metres of land, at an estimated cost of Dh146 million. Full lighting facilities have been ensured along with parking areas for different requirements, including designated spaces for people with disabilities in addition to safe pedestrian passes. "It will not only improve the quality of life for residents by offering more pleasant and useable surroundings, but it will also help the area businesses thrive by making it a destination of choice. Particularly, the students of the nearby universities would find it an inviting and stimulating place for activities," Engineer Khalid said.
