Kuwait- EU: Four countries face alarming risk of famine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 17 (KUNA) -- About 20 million people in Yemen, north-east Nigeria, Somalia and South Sudan, are facing an alarming risk of famine, the EU Foreign Affairs Council warned in a statement Monday.

The statement noted that the EU and its member states collectively have provided more than 1.2 billion euro (USD 1.3 billion) this year alone for humanitarian assistance in the four countries at risk of famine and called on all traditional and emerging donors for further efforts to be made.

The Council stressed however that funding is only part of the solution.

"These crises are man-made, with their roots lying in conflict, and they require political solutions going beyond humanitarian assistance," it said.

The Council which met in Brussels today urged international community continue to apply political pressure on all parties to end conflicts, and more actively support political processes leading to sustainable settlements. (end) nk.sd
