Truecaller report: India tops the world in spam calls!

The Truecaller blog has released a report offering insights into the incidence and frequency of spam calls across countries.

At a time when spamming and phone-based scams have been on the rise, this report gives us an insight into the regional break-up of spam calls across the world, ranking them from highest to lowest.

The data shows that India tops the list!

Calculated on the average number of spam calls received per user per month, Truecaller's data shows that India tops the list with 22.6 spam calls received per user per month.

USA and Brazil came a close second with 20.7 calls, followed by Chile (17.4), South Africa (15.0), Mexico (12.2), Turkey (12.2), Peru (12.2), and Nigeria (10.4) to make up the Top 10.

According to Truecaller's data, spammers in India can be largely classified into a few broad categories.

Operators account for 54% of spam calls, while nuisance calls account for 20%.

Telemarketing makes up 13% of all spam calls in India, followed by financial services' 9%.

3% of spam calls are scams, while the remaining 1% is insurance related.


A comparative study with the US

If one compares the break up of spammers in India and the US, one finds that the US receives a significantly higher percentage of nuisance and scam calls than India.

India, however, witnesses a massive amount of spam calls from operators trying to sell new deals - 53% compared to the US' 2%!
