Japan slams Israeli settlement construction in E. Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, July 14 (KUNA) -- Japan on Friday deeply deplored Israel's recent approval for the construction of new housing units in East Jerusalem, urging the Israeli government to review the plans.

"Israel has approved plans for the construction of settlement units despite repeated calls from the international community including Japan for freezing such activities. Settlement activities are in violation of international law and Japan has repeatedly called upon the Israeli government to fully freeze settlement activities," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Norio Maruyama said in a statement.

"Japan once again strongly urges the Israeli government to desist from implementing its construction plans that are undermining the viability of a two-state solution," Maruyama said. According to media report, the Israeli government last week approved plans to advance some 1,500 new illegal settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem. (end) mk.hb
