Kuwait- Env. center keen to study potential environmental disasters

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, July 13 (KUNA) -- Executive Director of the Environment and Life Sciences Research Center Abdul Nabi Al-Ghadban stressed Thursday Kuwait and the institute's keenness to study environmental disasters with all its scientific, technological and economic potentials in order to develop an integrated plan to take measures and security precautions to face any emergency.

Al-Ghadhban said during a seminar on tsunami risk assessment project on the Kuwait coast from earthquakes and landslides on behalf of the Director General of the Institute, Dr. Samir Omar, that the risks of the tsunami result in earthquakes and landslides along the coastal strip of Kuwait and there are precautions that must be taken in account for future prevention.

Kuwait has witnessed during the past years remarkable growth in various fields, some of which are reflected in the large number of buildings on the coastline of the country and requires researchers to undertake extensive studies to predict the occurrence of any natural disasters, including the tsunami and its impact and implications on the economy and health of the Gulf region, he said.

The Gulf region is relatively safe from the danger of the tsunami, but the study of the possibility of occurrence is important because of its devastating consequences at all levels, he added.

He pointed out that there are other disasters that developed after the tsunami Tohoku, which hit the coast of Japan in 2011 within the Fukushima nuclear one of the biggest disasters in history, Al-Ghadban said.

The institute is keen to establish the national network for seismic monitoring in 1997, and provided the station with the latest international technologies in the field of seismic monitoring to achieve the desired objectives of its establishment.

He added that the Kuwait National Seismic Network supports the geophysical and construction studies of residential areas and areas of industrial, economic and strategic importance in the country and the classification of the regions in terms of seismic activity recorded and the frequency of earthquakes, especially strong ones, to determine the potential risks during the earthquake.

Al-Ghadban expressed hope of drawing up a road map that will contribute effectively to the development of plans, programs and scientific solutions to potential natural disasters in the Gulf region and Kuwait in particular, stressing the importance of the Institute's project to assess the risks of the tsunami in order to avoid any danger facing the state or the Gulf region in the future.
