"We were very pleased to listen from Sergey Lavrov of possible de-escalation zone in the south of the country (Syria). It is very important to start a sort of ceasefire in some places and then to start the political discussions inside the UN framework," Reynders told journalists after the meeting.

He said the two sides discussed the situation in Libya, in the Middle East to try to see if it is possible to work together on some solution.

On his part, Lavrov said they also discussed Libya, Yemen and the situation in the Gulf.

"We talked a lot about Syria. We see some positive shifts there as the agreements reached back in May in Astana are being implemented to set up a few de-escalation zones. The south-west zone has been formed with Russia, US and Jordan.

The ceasefire has more or less held and we hope that this trend will continue," he said.

Referring to the ongoing Geneva talks on Syria, Lavrov hoped that both the government and the opposition will seek to work out a constructive agreement. (end) nk.mb
