(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- As per the agreement signed between Bayan College and Freie University Berlin, Bayan College under its Faculty of Media Studies represented Oman as part of the ten Arab countries that participated in a 2017 Media Summer school in Berlin Germany.

The Summer school lasted from July 3-8, with the second batch of students participating till July 9 under the theme 'Understanding Arab Media' took place at Freie University Berlin in Germany.

The memorandum signed between Bayan College and Freie University Berlin stipulates sending graduate or undergraduate students for one semester or one year for the purpose of providing them with an opportunity to take advantage of the joint expertise of both institutions.

The summer School had 28 participants from ten Arab countries that included Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Tunisia and Yemen and also involved Freie University Masters students of Media and Communication and Global Communication and International Journalism. These students collaborated together on a project that focused on a comparative perspective on different Arab media as well as a better understanding for the transnational and global dynamics that emanate from this region.

According to Mundua Samuel, lecturer of Media Studies at Bayan College who represented the college in Berlin Germany, the summer School preceded a regular university course 'Comparing Arab Media' at Freie University Berlin.

He said, 'During this course, the German Masters students together with their counterparts from Arab countries, jointly developed research questions on the peculiarities of the Arab media and intensively examined the role of the media in Arab countries.'

He further noted that through the Summer School, both students of Freie University (FU) and the students from Arab partner universities and colleges will continue working jointly on this project that will culminate into short educational videos which will be uploaded onto Freie University's learning platform 'International Media'.

The dean of Bayan College Dr Modi Juma al Ghalaini said that Bayan College's policy on international collaborations with media institutions and universities around the world is often given a priority in a bid to further raise the standards of the college to international levels.

The dean further stressed that the college has been participating in the Media and Digital Academy (MDLAB) in Beirut, Lebanon for four years in American University of Beirut (AUB). This year students from Bayan College will be participating in the upcoming MDLAB 2017 in August.

'Bayan College offers students an opportunity to explore international media and in building a connection with different countries by participating in international workshops.

'In these workshops, students develop their skills and potentials in better understanding the media. The college also provides different opportunities for
example, student exchange through collaborations with other international universities and institutions. We strongly believe that such workshops and international collaborations expose the students to develop their interest in media and to update them about the new trends applied in the world of media,' said the dean.

Bayan College which is a member of the Arab European Association for Media and Communication Researchers (AREACORE) was represented by one lecturer, Samuel, and two students, Ishaq Khalfan Alial Rawahi and AzzanAdilAlial Balushi, from the Faculty of Media Studies.

Other activities during the Summer School included media excursions to the press conference of the German Government in a bid to explore journalism and politics in Germany.

Students also visited the Federal Germany Media Regulatory body to study the regulation of private broadcasting in Germany.

Other excursions were at the Germany Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Media and Cooperation and Transition where students were taken through how the NGO cooperates with Arab journalists.

The students were also taken to DW, Deutsche Welle Berlin, German state-owned media where they were specifically introduced to media production for the Arab world.
