Kuwait- Floods, landslides kill 53 people in NE India


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, July 11 (KUNA) -- At least 53 Indians were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced following floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain in the two north eastern states of Assam and Arrunachal Pradesh, official media reported Tuesday.

Around six people were killed in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Barpeta and Kamrup Metropolitan districts, bringing the death toll in this year's floods up to 39 people, Assam government said in a statement, according to the Press Trust of India.

Assam governor Banwarilal Purohit visited the affected Nagaon district today and interacted with people at relief camps, it said, adding that he directed the district authorities to ensure adequate arrangement for supplying clean water, medicines, sanitation and baby food.

Meanwhile, a massive landslide caused by heavy rain hit Laptap village of Papum Pare district in the northeastern state of Arrunachal Pradesh, killing at least 14 people, government authorities stated.

The massive landslide damaged at least five houses in the area, authorities said in a statement, adding that 14 members of four families lost their lives after being buried under the landslide. (end) atk.ma
