Erdogan says Turkey becomes silk road of energy

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISTANBUL, July 10 (KUNA) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday many energy experts called Turkey the "Silk Road of Energy" due to its strategic geopolitical location.

In a speech during the 22nd session of the World Petroleum Congress in Istanbul, Erdogan said his country was ready to study new gas projects, mainly in the eastern Mediterranean and Iraq.

Turkey wants energy resources to contribute to peace and prosperity, not to conflicts, tension or destruction, he noted.

On Syria's crisis, Erdogan said field situations should be settled first in order to conduct negotiations for political solution in the country.

On Iraq, the Turkish leader said the Iraqi forces' recapture of Mosul City from the so-called Islamic State (IS) is a good news, but the city has been destroyed.

He affirmed that the security of energy resources is linked to the elimination of terrorist organizations.

He added the Turkish people would not keep silent towards what is going on around them, but will respond to the attacks targeting their country.

Turkey insists on taking required measures so as to maintain its internal and external security, he stressed.

The congress kicked off on Sunday and runs until Thursday, with the participation of high-level executives from leading energy companies and up to 50 energy ministers. (end) ta.hm
