UN regards gender equality 5th priority for development

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIRUT, July 10 (KUNA) -- The United Nations regards gender equality as a fifth priority for development as a fundamental human right and one of the most important foundations for peace, prosperity and sustainability in the world.

"Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is a process shared by all components of society," the UN Center in Beirut said in its fifth publication on sustainable development goals.

It noted that girls in sub-Saharan Africa and West Asia still face many barriers to enrollment in primary and secondary education, noting that the new data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics reports that about 16 million girls between the ages of 6 and 11 will never enroll in primary school compared to eight millions of boys who are not enrolled.

آ آ آ The United Nations said women accounted for only 23 percent of the total number of parliamentarians in the world, according to the latest IPU report.

آ آ آ On the level of employment, the United Nations noted the ILO report, which said that between 1995 and 2015, the fastest pace of employment growth was the largest in emerging economies, where the absolute change in employment levels was twice as high for men as for women, about 382 million versus 191 million, regardless of the level of skills required, which means that progress towards women's access to more and better job opportunities has become stagnant.

آ آ آ Women should work alongside boys and men to enable countries to build strong economies and healthier societies, the report quoted Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women as saying.

آ آ آ The United Nations will work with governments and civil society over the next 15 years to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere and harmful practices such as child marriage, early marriage, forced marriage and female genital mutilation, besides access to all services and ensure their involvement in decision-making at all levels.

The United Nations highlighted efforts to address violence against women by encouraging States to enact and enforce national laws to address and punish all forms of violence against women and girls.

آ آ آ The State of Kuwait is keen to involve women in developing development plans, participating in decision-making and activating their role in civil society organizations, and has declared its commitment to implement the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations, the fifth of which is gender equality.

آ آ آ In May 2005, late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, issued a decree granting women the right to stand and run for office.

آ آ آ Kuwait's Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and State Minister for Economic Affairs Hind Al-Subeeh said in a speech on the occasion of Kuwaiti Women's Day that official statistics indicate that 55 Kuwaiti women hold leadership positions at the level of undersecretary and assistant undersecretary.(end).
