Syrian rejects Israel's illegal local elections in Golan Heights

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, July 8 (KUNA) -- Syria Saturday rejected Israel's decision to organize local elections in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, considering it a "blatant violation" of the international law.

The Syrian government "categorically rejects the Israeli occupation's announcement over elections of so-called local councils, in October next year, in the villages of the occupied Syrian Golan with the aim of annexing it," the foreign ministry said in two letters to UN Secretary General and President of the UN Security Council.

It reiterated that the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967, were integral parts of the Syrian territories and would be liberated "sooner or later." The Israeli decision, the ministry statement said, was violating the UN Charter, International humanitarian law and Geneva conventions regarding the protection of civilians during war times.

The decision, it added, was yet another sign of Israel's "disrespect of the Syrian sovereignty over the Syrian Golan." (end) tk.bs
