Oman- Sultanate takes part in FAO conference in Rome


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, took part in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference recently.

The 40th session which was held from July 3-8 discussed food and agriculture issues. The sultanate's delegation to the conference was led by H E Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. About 1,000 participants from 194 members in the organisation including 70 ministers and 15 deputy ministers took part in the session.

H E Dr Sajwani in his speech said that different people in the globe face many challenges that affect the welfare and lives of individuals and communities. He added that the implications of poverty, hunger and shortage of food are still major concerns that threaten a large number of people (about 800mn).

He pointed out that the sultanate has attached due care to studying the current and future risks as a preemptive institutional measure. In this connection, it has developed the national strategy for climate change in the sultanate and work is under way to follow up the necessary measures and complete the sustainable agriculture and rural development strategy 2040, as well as the investment plan 2016-20.

He also added that the sultanate achieved 61.3 per cent growth in the GDP for agriculture and fisheries sector 2016-20.

The participants discussed a number of urgent issues that include converting commitment to action to achieve the global goal namely eliminating hunger, the scarcity of water, food security, climate change in the Near East and North Africa and sustainable solution to prevent famine in the states affected by conflicts.
