EU slams Israeli settlement policy as illegal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 7 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Friday condemned Israeli plans to build for over 1,500 new settlement units in East Jerusalem.

"The settlement policy is illegal under international law, and its continuation undermines the viability of the two-state solution and the prospect for a lasting peace," said Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement.

She noted that further Israeli settlement plans are expected to move forward, including in the Palestinian neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah and said "the EU expects the Israeli authorities to reconsider these decisions." "The EU expects both sides to engage in a meaningful process towards a negotiated two-state solution, the only way to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of both parties, and stands ready to support them in this endeavour, together with international and regional partners," added the statement.
