Jordan- A taste of days to come?

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Jordan Meteorological Department cautioning the public about the heatwave that has affected the country over the past few days and is expected to continue until today, and the Civil Defence Department urged the public to avoid direct sun exposure and stay hydrated.

Due to the heatwave, temperatures are expected to be 7-9 degrees higher than their average at this time of the year.

The hot spell is expected to take a toll on people's health as well as on farming in the Jordan Valley.

In the case of the latter, to prevent crop damage, the Jordan Valley Authority said it will continue to provide extra amounts of water to farmers.

For the former, people are warned to take precautions, like wearing loose garments, hats and sunglasses, avoiding noon sun and drinking lots of liquids.

The department also advised the public against swimming in dangerous water bodies, such as dams, water canals and agricultural ponds, while the Ministry of Health warned about the risk of sunstroke, which can be fatal if not treated immediately, and against the danger of dehydration.

It also called on health directors to intensify inspection campaigns of shops and street vendors, as cases of diarrhoea and food poisoning tend to increase in hot weather.

Electricity use has understandably increased during this hot spell due to the excessive use of air conditioning and fans, which could lead to power outages.

Almost the entire northern hemisphere has suffered from heatwave, with temperatures reaching levels unheard of in some parts of the globe, yet there are still those who remain sceptical about global warming.

Climate change is happening, whether some believe it or continue to harbour doubts about the validity of well-documented scientific projections about climate.

Research into ice cores shows that current atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane gas levels, both greenhouse gases, are higher than at any time in the last 800,000 years. The rate of increase of these gases is faster than any likely to have happened in the recent geological past.

And that is one aspect. The world is increasingly experiencing odd meteorological phenomena, changed weather patterns, unheard of occurrences. All these are not imagined or hoaxes. They are felt by suffering populations, and they should really make humanity spring into action before the planet is damaged beyond repair.

Time to take global warming seriously.
