(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The auto market recorded EGP 9.4bn in sales in the first four months of 2017, selling more than 26,000 units, a 42% decrease compared to the 44,900 units sold in the same period last year.
Japanese brands topped total car sales at a total of roughly 11,800 cars from January until the end of April 2017 at a total value of EGP 5.1bn.
Korean brands came in second with 5,700 units sold, valued at EGP 1.5bn, followed by European brands with about 3,600 cars worth EGP 1.4bn.
American brands sold close to 3,100 vehicles worth EGP 972.7m, ranking fourth of the bestselling brands in the local car market.
Chinese brands were ranked fifth with only 1,457 sold vehicles, down by 55.1%, at a total value of EGP 270.3m.
The surge in car prices in 2016 led to the growth of the value of car sales by an amount of EGP 10.4bn, after the market's total sales reached EGP 44.4bn last year compared to EGP 34bn in 2015. The personal cars market sold more than 142,000 units, down by 27%, compared to 195,500 cars in 2015.
The 2015 market was led by Korean brand cars, which topped the sales by 46,100 cars from the beginning of January until the end of December 2016, at a total value of EGP 12.07bn.
Japanese brands came in second place with about 40,680 units worth EGP 16.28bn, followed by European brands with about 19,500 cars worth EGP 6.3bn.
American brands sold about 18,700 vehicles in 2016 worth EGP 4.88bn, ranking fourth in the list of the bestselling brands in the Egyptian car market.
Chinese brands ranked fifth with 16,600 cars, a growth of 1.8% at a total value of EGP 3.4bn.
Nissan tops Japanese brands
The new Nissan Sunny maintained its rank as the bestselling Japanese cars in Egypt during the first four months of this year, recording nearly 3,447 sold cars worth EGP 672m.
The Nissan Qashqai came in second place with 885 sold units, at a value of EGP 765m, followed by the Nissan Sentra with 1,919 sold units worth EGP 531.5m.
The Mitsubishi Lancer ranked fourth with 1,812 cars valued at EGP 471m, and the Toyota Corolla with 948 sold units worth more than EGP 374m.
The new Nissan Sunny maintained the throne of bestselling Japanese cars in Egypt last year, with nearly 12,000 sold cars worth EGP 2.39bn.
Mitsubishi sold about 7,189 units, at a value of EGP 1.7bn, followed by Nissan Sentra, with 4,820 sold units valued at EGP 1.2bn.
The Toyota Corolla ranked fourth with 4,203 cars worth EGP 1.6bn and the Nissan Qashqai with 2,761 sold units worth more than EGP 1bn.
The Verna sells 1,343 cars in 4 months
still topping the list of bestselling Korean cars in Egypt, recording 1,343 sold units between January and April 2017, worth EGP 198m. The Verna is the cheapest Korean car in Egypt and is assembled locally at Ghabbour Auto.
The Hyundai Elantra HD came in second place with 1,147 sold cars worth EGP 255.7m, followed by the Kia Cerato, with 800 units valued at EGP 239.9m.
The Kia Sportage came in fourth place with 569 cars worth EGP 256m, and the Hyundai Tucson sold 386 sold worth EGP 196.4m.
Last year, the Hyundai Verna held the top of the list of bestselling Korean cars in Egypt, recording 11,200 units worth EGP 1.7bn.
The Hyundai Tucson came in second place with 7,729 sold cars worth EGP 3.05bn, followed by the Hyundai Elantra HD with 5,088 units worth EGP 1.3bn.
The Elantra AD ranked fourth with 3,770 sold cars worth EGP 1.2bn, and the Kia Cerato with 3,665 sold units worth EGP 879m.
The Tiggo leads Chinese brands' sales
The Chery Tiggo sold 909 cars from January until the end of April, worth EGP 195.4m, to top the sales of Chinese brands. The Tiggo is one of the most popular Chinese cars in Egypt.
The Geely Emgrand 7 came in second place with total sales of 319 units valued at EGP 38.9m, while the Chery Infiniti ranked the third with 207 cars worth EGP 30m. The Brilliance V5 ranked fourth with 20 cars only worth EGP 5.7m, and the Brilliance S30 sold only one car worth EGP 100,000.
The Chery Tiggo outperformed its Chinese counterpart Geely Emgrand 7, to top the list of bestselling Chinese cars in Egypt in 2016. The Tiggo sold 4,529 units worth EGP 2.2m last year.
The Geely Emgrand 7 ranked the second with 4,052 sold cars valued at EGP 512m, and the Chery Infiniti with 3,644 units worth EGP 559m occupying the third place.
The Brilliance V5 came in fourth place with 370 cars valued at EGP 103m, and the Brilliance FSV with six units worth EGP 540,000.
The Opel Insignia tops European cars
The car surprised the auto market as, during the first four months of this year, it sold 687 units worth EGP 384.7m.
The Opel Astra came in second place with 661 sold cars valued at EGP 237m, followed by the Renault Duster in third place, recording 593 sold units worth EGP 180m. The Renault Cadjar came in fourth place with 326 units valued at EGP 127.1m, followed by the Renault Captur with 242 units valued at EGP 79.8m.
In 2016, the Opel Astra maintained the top spot among the bestselling European cars in Egypt, selling 3,382 units worth EGP 1.37bn.
The Opel Insignia came in second place with 2,706 sold cars worth EGP 1.46bn, followed by the Peugeot 301 with a total of 1,549 units sold, valued at EGP 271m. This was followed by the Skoda Octavia in fourth place with 1,101 cars worth EGP 209m. Finally, the Renault Step Way sold 1,025 units worth EGP 184m.
The Ford Focus sells more than the Lanos and Aveo
The Chevrolet Optra came in the top spot among American car sales, selling 897 units during the first four months of 2017, at a value of EGP 188m.
The Ford Focus followed the Optra with 637 units worth EGP 207m, surpassing the Chevrolet Lanos, which ranked third on the list, recording 433 units worth EGP 67.3m. The Chevrolet Aveo came in fourth place with 399 cars worth EGP 83m and the Chevrolet Cruze ranked fifth with 192 units worth EGP 61m.
The Chevrolet Aveo topped the US sales, recording 3,698 units in 2016, worth EGP 683m, followed by the Chevrolet GP52 selling 3,475 units worth EGP 729.7m, and the Chevrolet Lanos in third place with 3,449 units worth EGP 508m.
The Jeep Renegade came in fourth place with 2,008 units worth EGP 763m and the Chevrolet Cruze with 2,006 units valued at EGP 393m.
