It was a morning filled with excitement for hundreds of students and parents who trooped the much anticipated opening of the new Philippine School Doha (PSD) building yesterday marking the start of the new school year.
After 24 years of moving from one rented building to another, PSD — the first Philippine school in Qatar — finally got a permanent campus in Abu Hamour. More than 3,800 students as well as hundreds of parents flocked to PSD yesterday morning to see the four storey-building with all its modern facilities. Due to technical problems concerning the air conditioning system, however, classes were suspended to ensure the comfort and convenience of students. Classrooms specially on the ground floor and first floor were affected by the air cooling system problem.
'I admire those parents who understood the inconvenience that the school may have caused due to air cooling system which is beyond our control but I also understand those parents who cannot take their children suffer from this inconvenience. The school ensures our dear parents that the safety and comfort of our students are of paramount importance; however, there are circumstances that are beyond our control. My indulgence to our dear parents, Dr Alexander Acosta, school principal, said.
Acosta later announced the suspension of classes until Thursday to balance the air cooling system in all the classrooms. Classes will resume on Sunday. However, the school will remain open during the week for those who have transactions in the finance, registrar's office and transport services, he said.
While some parents were annoyed of what happened, some parents understood the situation. They lauded the school administration for finally achieving the dream of having its own campus after many years. 'The school has many new facilities, some of which I have seen today which I believe will surely help our children excel in their studies, said one parent.
'Due to the mere size of the previous building, the school had to decline some students for many years, but now that it moved to a bigger campus, more students can be accommodated, another parent said.
Located on a government-donated 14,375sqm plot next to the religious complex, the QR123mn four-storey building boasts of state-of-the-art facilities such as four science laboratories complete with modern equipment, classrooms fitted with smart boards, a gymnasium with a capacity of more than 3,000 people and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The school, which will officially be inaugurated in October, is in the process of becoming the first Philippine science school in the Middle East, set to elevate its status and further raise its standards.
