As Eid Al Fitr festivities draws to a close and temperature soars, health experts are cautioning people about indulging in eating and dehydration.
To prevent from falling sick during the Eid celebrations and in hot summer, Dr Eltayib Yousef, a Consultant at Hamad General's Hospitals Emergency Department, advices to eat healthy food in moderation and avoid consumption of soft drinks, not to skip breakfast, and drink sufficient amount of water.
A total of 685 cases were treated at the Emergency Department yesterday. Among them six were seen due to cardiac problems, three road traffic accidents, 28 stomach ailments and 32 had trauma due to different reasons including falls and dehydration.
The cases were received between 6am and 6pm.
'Majority of the patients were youth. Some of them were suffering from gastric issues such as nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and indigestion due to over consumption of sweet and oily food," Dr Yaousef told The Peninsula. "Although it's the festive season people should avoid over consumption of some food items and try to avoid junk food as possible, Dr Yaousef said.
'Also the temperature is high and people should take precautions like drinking more water and avoiding exposure to hot sun," he added.
Keep hydrated throughout the day, try to choose healthy options like small portions of low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats, avoid salty foods and sugary and caffeinated drinks, heavy fatty foods, which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, he added.
People should also avoid refined carbohydrates and sugar (like white bread, white rice, sweets and pastries) which raise blood sugar. Food items should be stored properly in refrigerator or as directed on the food label.
At instances where people are suffering from diabetes and heart disease, the health risks are multiplied with sudden loss of control in blood sugar levels created by consumption of large amounts of sweets and sugars, according to Dr Yaousef.
