At least 500 patients were treated at the Emergency Department of Hamad General Hospital (HGH) on the second day of Eid Al Fitr yesterday. However, none of the cases were critical, said an official.

Among cases the department received were cardiac problems, road traffic accidents, stomach ailments and trauma due to different reasons.

The number of cases seen during the Eid Al Fitr, especially related to road traffic accidents, has reduced as a result of the awareness created among the public, said Dr Ahmed Al Shaikly, Consultant at the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department treated only three people with road traffic injuries, ten patients for cardiac problems, 22 for stomach ailments and 16 for trauma. The cases were received between 6am and 6pm. 'It's very good to see that we have very few cases from road traffic accidents and other conditions. All patients are stable and only one or two might need hospital admission, and others can be sent home with medication, Dr Al Shaikly told The Peninsula.

'People are aware now, and so they take precautions and stay safe. It's a good sign and the awareness created by the HMC and other entities has made this impact on the public, he added.

During Ramadan and Eid holidays, it is not uncommon for emergency departments across the country to see an influx of patients with gastrointestinal complaints and cases due to road traffic accidents. But this year, the emergency departments at HMC's Hamad General Hospital and Al Khor Hospital did not see any notable spike in the number of urgent cases within the first week of Ramadan as well.
