Russia hopes forthcoming Astana talks will boost conciliation for Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, June 26 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday expressed hope that upcoming talks for Syria in the Kazakh capital Astana would help in pushing forward the conciliation process for the war-torn nation.

Lavrov, speaking after talks with his visiting Ethiopian counterpart, hoped that the forthcoming discussions in Astana would impact positively on the efforts for settling the strife and moving forward the negotiating process in Geneva.

UN special envoy for Syria, Steffan de Mistura, will partake in the Astana talks, he revealed.

Kazakhstan had declared that the discussions in the country's capital would resume on July 4th.

Lavrov accused the United States and its allies of trying to protect Al-Nusra Front from attacks, describing such an approach as very dangerous. He also charged Washington of having double standards on Syria.

Russia is the main sponsor for the political process in Astana that had resulted in shaky cease-fires. The other track of talks in Geneva is mainly sponsored by the United States and the allies.

The Syrian crisis has dragged on for many years, causing tragedies for millions of people who have either lost their homes or have become refugees.

Moscow is a main ally of the Syrian regime for long time. Since start of the crisis, it has expanded its military presence in Syria. (end) as.rk
