Centenary Vineyards in Costa del Sol? Let's save the Vineyards of the Urban Development Harassment

(MENAFNEditorial) Centenary Vineyards in Costa del Sol? Let's save the Vineyards of the Urban Development Harassment Project description

Manilva is a small municipality on the Costa del Sol in Malaga, with a long wine tradition based on the Muscat of Alexandria grape, of an extraordinary quality.

This municipality represents a clear example of what has supposed the urban development madness, with the progressive replacement of vineyards and rural areas by brick and asphalt. The spectacular real-estate boom that has lived the Costa del Sol in general and Manilva especially in the last decades turned a good part of the rustic areas of vineyard into urban areas. And those who still had not joined to the urbanization process, turned into reservations of soil before the imminent constructive advance.

With the workforce overturned in the construction sector, much better remunerated that the sacrificed agricultural world, the vineyards were abandoned gradually, having already gone two-thirds of the acreage.

Vineyards that survive have been cultivated mainly by an ageing agricultural population (they were those who planted them, appreciate them and and want to preserve as Manilva's real heritage), by workers come from other regions and small owners who want to keep their natural heritage at the expense of an enormous personal effort.

The economic crisis has been a misfortune for many families. However, it can suppose the salvation from the vineyards of Manilva thanks to the urban development slowdown.

We must to take advantage of this key moment before it is too much late. Maintain and preserve the vineyards of Manilva (the great natural heritage) and make this municipality a privileged place in the world of viticulture and winemaking is an exciting challenge, especially in the current circumstances.

We have created the company NILVA ENOTURISMO SL, which operates under administrative concession regime for 10 years a heritage that belongs to the municipality of Manilva and which is composed by the Vineyard El Peñoncillo and the CIVIMA building (Center of Interpretation of Vineyards of Manilva) where is installed the Wine Museum and Winery with an auditorium, shop and multipurpose rooms for events and tasting.

The developed activity includes different sectors:

a) The cultivation of Vineyard of Peñoncillo (certified like ecological)

b) The winemaking

c) Wine tourism with guided tours to the Museum, Winery and Vineyard, trying to attract a quality tourism as an alternative to Sun and beach tourism.

Result of this project and after several years working in the shadows, has born our wine NILVA, unique wine of Manilva, very limited production and protected under the Denomination of Origin Sierras de Malaga. Nilva is young, dry and fruity white type, in keeping with the demands of current and is the ideal accompaniment to the local gastronomy based on fish and seafood from the local fishing. In addition to developing dry wines Nilva type, traditional and highly demanded sweet wines are also produced.

And a special work will be done for a singular product: Manilva raisins, a product of extraordinary quality that is being sold to bulk to other regions where they obtain the added value of marketing.

Another work that is being done is the awareness to the Administration in order to obtain the legal protection of the vineyards and avoid the speculative urban development.

Who we are?

Our company, Nilva Enoturismo SL was born in Manilva (Málaga) in 2014. Who's behind? A family, my family. I am Argimiro Martínez Moreno, an agricultural engineer by profession, small farmer and vine-grower of cradle.

Member of the College of Agricultural Engineers in Andalusia and the Andalusian Association of Winemakers. Born and raised in the hamlet of Torre de Uchea, Hellín (Albacete), the desire to explore new horizons brought me up to Costa del Sol, where I met immersed in the darkest years of the urban development maelstrom, up to finish in the office of the unemployment. In my haphazard way Manilva crossed. Here I have met again with the simple village life, with the hard work of the most primitive agriculture (in the best of the senses), with farmers… and all this in a natural environment of incomparable beauty.

Confidence in the future of Manilva has led me to undertaking a complex, difficult and uncertain project, forged i in the hardest moments of the brutal economic crisis that this country has suffered. At the same time, this is a vital and exciting project that is not only to grow vines and make wine.

With this project we try to stop the abandon of the vineyards and to begin a new stage of Recovery. But when we talk of RECOVERY we do not speak only about the vineyard; we speak of recovering personal values, the Revolt to the Nature, the dignity of farm labor, of forget speculators, the necessary compatibility between quality tourism and the respect to this magnificent territory. It is a slow and complicated process because we don't generate short-term box, but it should serve like an example, a seed, in order that other entrepreneurs follow the way that we are opening.

With your support, this project is possible. Many vineyards are still alive; still we are in time.

what we will destine your contributions to?

To carry out this project we needed to work hard during the darkest years of the crisis, to produce a quality wine. We have had to finance us by pulling on scarce personal resources.

Your contributions will aim to cover part of the administrative fee that we pay annually to the municipality of Manilva to develop this project; also, contributions will be destined to buy the necessary current expenditures for farm and bodega.
