Video: Dubai Marina's orange water mystery continues

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The water in Dubai Marina turned reddish-orange on Thursday late afternoon and soon social media was buzzing with pictures of the strange phenomenon.

It is still not known what exactly caused the change in colour but the water continued to be unclear on Friday morning. The orange water is spread over at least 1.5km but there was no smell along the Marina. Khaleej Times tried to get more information from locals and businesses around but nobody seemed to know.

Emaar security guard at Dubai Marina just told Khaleej Times that Dubai Municipality Officials have been on site since the morning, trying to locate the source of the reddish water. The Municipality officials were at the building One Marina examining the contamination that sources believe could be from the construction site nearby. Thankfully, the contamination doesn't affect the drinking water supply of residents in Marina.

We spoke to the maintenance crew at the bridge near Wyndham Hotel where a construction is underway. They told Khaleej Times that most likely it is a groundwater problem from the construction site but DEWA officials are inspecting the source after being alerted on Thursday evening.

Eng. Talib Julfar, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Environment and Public Health Services Sector, said a nearby construction site was mostly the factor of contaminating Dubai Marina's water colour that turned it into Reddish-orange.

"It is probably a substance that contactors use to strengthen weak soil. The substance is used as contractors pour the casting after they dewater the area," Julfar told Khaleej Times, noting that the substance probably made its way to the water.

He stressed that the negative effect is only on the color, without affecting the safety of the water. He added that the team is working to clean the water and recover its color.

Few weeks back, there was a change in sea colour at Dubai's Jumeirah beachand the Dubai Municipality had issued a clarification on the same. They had attributed it to a type of Algal Blooms growth that was harmless and would away within few days.Have you noticed
