Morocco- Two Apartment Blocks Collapse in Fez

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – Two five-floor apartment blocks collapsed in the Sidi Boujida district of Fez around 8 p.m. on Thursday night. Nobody was injured, as no residents were in the buildings at the time.

Firefighters helped police and other security forces to secure the site, but ensuing rubble and dust has obstructed the well-frequented street below.

The blocks' residents moved into the flats recently despite warnings from the Laboratory of Testings and Studies (LPEE) that the buildings were dangerous.

It is thought that the collapse was caused because of a demolition operation to nearby buildings.

A local source told Morocco World News that the buildings in the area are notoriously unsafe, with some having more floors than are legally allowed. The source continued that landlords are permitted to demolish the buildings, but since they are not allowed to rebuild in the space, most choose to keep them open.
