DUBAI, 22nd June, 2017 (WAM) -- Protection of the environment and preservation of resources were part of a legacy that became increasingly important since the establishment of the UAE as a unified country back in 1971, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasised at a recent gathering.

This legacy became more deep-rooted after the founder of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, prioritised the environment and sustainable development, Al-Zeyoudi said during a symposium organised by the Rewaq Ousha Educational and Cultural Centre on Wednesday to discuss the UAE's environmental protection capabilities.

"The progress and prosperity that the UAE is experiencing today were made possible by the insightful vision and directives of our wise leadership, as well as its unlimited support for all efforts aimed at ensuring a bright future, both in the short and the long term, for a diversified economy in the post-oil era. The state is focussing its efforts on developing and enhancing existing sectors while creating new ones.

"Efforts are being made to prepare qualified citizens to assume leading positions and continue the journey of progress into the 21st century," Al-Zeyoudi noted.

He further said that his ministry's strategy was in line with the country's general policy.

In January 2012, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the UAE Green Growth Strategy as a long-term national initiative under the slogan 'A Green Economy for Sustainable Development', he explained.

Since then, the ministry is working with its partners to achieve the UAE Green Agenda, approved by the cabinet in 2015.
