Oman Sail names squads for worlds


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) With the final preparatory camps and selection trials completed, Oman Sail on Wednesday announced the national squads for the Techno 293 Youth World Championships in France and the Optimist World Championship in Thailand.

The national windsurfers (Techno 293) took part in an intensive training for ten days at the French National Sailing School in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, the venue of the 2017 Techno 293 World and Youth Championships.

After the conclusion of the camp, Mukhtar al Mujaini, Abdullah al Sarhi and Ali al

Omrani were selected for the youth worlds, which will be held from July 15-20.

The U15 and U17 windsurfers will also compete in the Techno 293 European Championships in Lorient, France from July 22-29.

The U15 team will comprise Abdullah al Sarhi and Ali al Omrani while the U17 squad will consist of Usama al Breiki, Mohammed al Balushi and Ali al Sarhi.

The national optimist squad, which also trained in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, was selected for Thailand worlds. The team comprises Samiha al Riyami, the only girl sailor, Mohammed al Qasmi, Mohammed al Alawi, Al Mutassim al Farsi and Alla al Omrani.

'The training camp has been important for the whole team, and a great team-building experience ahead of the different world and European championships,' said Koray Ezer, Oman Sail's head of performance.

Strong show

at Kiel Week

Oman sailors also competed at the world famous Kiel Week in Germany that is being held from June 17-25.

In the Laser 4.7 class, Salim al Alawi came up with a good show to finish sixth while teammate Marwan al Jabri came seventh among 74 participants. Adnan al Mabsali finished 38th.

'The trio did great work and stayed focused the whole time,' said Abdul Aziz al Shidi, youth pathway coach at Oman Sail.

'They improved throughout the regatta and performed well. Salim, Marwan and Adnan have a good spirit, they kept fighting in every race and never gave up even if they had a bad race.'
