Suleimani to be Oman's only athlete at U18 worlds

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's Mohammed al Suleimani will be the sultanate's only representative at the IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. The championships will be held from July 12-16.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Jahad al Sheikh, the general secretary of the Oman Athletics Association (OAA), confirmed that Suleimani will be the only athlete at the worlds.

'He has already left for the camp in Nairobi to help him acclimatise to Nairobi's altitude and weather conditions. Suleimani will compete in the 2,000m steeplechase event,' said Jahad.

An Asian U18 bronze medallist, the 17 year old Suleimani, is accompanied by Algerian coach Laid Toutache.

According to the IAAF, the world athletics governing body, Nairobi will host the final edition of the World U18 Championships as the IAAF's focus will shift towards driving regional and continental competitions. The worlds has so far attracted 130 countries.

Jahad said that as the weather in Oman is too hot for training, the best option for Suleimani, the national U20 champion, was to train abroad.

Suleimani, who won Oman's cross-country title in February before settling for bronze at Asian Youth Athletics Championships in May in Thailand, is expected to compete in 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina.
