US urges China to increase pressures on North Korea

(MENAFN) In Washington, the US asked China to put more economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to help in restraining its nuclear and missile programs.

During a meeting joined by US and Chinese diplomats, which was held after President Donald Trump who said that China's efforts to use its power with North Korea had failed, doubts were raised over US strategy to counter the threat from North Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said: "We reiterated to China that they have a diplomatic responsibility to exert much greater economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime if they want to prevent further escalation in the region."

Also, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis vowed to "continue to take necessary measures to defend ourselves and our allies" against North Korea.
