Government says drinking water supply restored in Ratnapura

The Government says the drinking water supply has been restored in Ratnapura.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen said that as a result of speedy relief operations, the number of flood victim shelters in Ratnapura has decreased. He said drinking water supply has now been restored and most water wells have also been renovated. 'Lanka Sathosa has issued dry rations and essential items (as disaster relief) to the value of Rs 10 Million,' the Minister said today.

Minister Bathiudeen visited Ratnapura to review the progress of relief efforts for the flood victims in the area.

'Latest reports from the Divisional Secretariat show that the total families affected in the Ratnapura electorate to be 8984 (36431 persons) and total houses damaged in the electorate at 1930 (1861 partly damaged),' he said.

He said the number of camps for the flood victims have reduced from 9 to 5 thus bringing the number of families in camps down to 77 from 121 at the time of floods. The Industrial Development Board (IDB) under Minister Bathiudeen has identified 264 small and medium industries in Ratnapura which were damaged and require assistance to revive operations.
