(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, May 27 (KUNA) -- The G7 summit concluded in the Italian city of Taormina Saturday by calling for putting an end to the Syrian crisis through a political solution in line with relevant international resolutions.
Speaking at a news conference following the end of the summit, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said six G-7 countries confirmed their commitment to the Paris agreement on climate change.
He expressed his hope that the Donald Trump administration would settle the climate change issue quickly, stressing that the summit led to some common points in this regard.
He said that this summit, which was expected to be the toughest, witnessed a very honest debate, but there were no divisions, referring to the sharp differences mainly between President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel who canceled her final press conference.
On the other hand, Gentiloni pointed to the satisfactory level of consensus regarding international political solution in particular crises in North Korea, Syria and Libya, and the fight against terrorism.
He said that the most important outcome of the summit is the joint commitment to combating terrorism mentioned in the declaration issued by the leaders of G7 yesterday.
In the final communique, the leaders expressed their belief that after six years of war that badly affected the Syrian people, there is still an opportunity to end this tragic crisis.
They called for concerted efforts by all parties to resolve the crisis through a comprehensive political process by the Syrians under the supervision of the United Nations to have a real transition in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva statement.
They confirmed their determination to speed up efforts so as to defeat international terrorism in Syria, mainly the so-called Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, noting that it is impossible to defeat terrorism without reaching a political settlement to the crisis in Syria.
On the other hand, the leaders hoped that the Astana agreement would alleviate violence, and readiness to work with Russia if it decides to exert its influence by resolving the conflict in Syria through a political solution.
On the Libyan crisis, the communique stressed the pressing need to proceed with the comprehensive political dialogue and national reconciliation, welcoming the recent meetings amongst main Libyan players. (end) mn.hm
