To meet increased workload due to Ramadan, the number of veterinary doctors has been increased to 30 in four abattoirs of Doha. The abattoirs are expected to receive up to 4,500 animals daily during the holy month.
'The four abattoirs in Doha have recently gone through maintenance and are now ready for Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr and the number of veterinary doctors has been increased to 30 to meet growing demand during the holy month. The abattoirs are expected to receive 4,000 to 4,500 animals daily for slaughter, said Mohammed Ahmed Buhashim AlSayed, Health Control Section Head at Doha Municipality, in an interview with The Peninsula.
He said that as many as 49 food outlets were shut down and 96 violations were registered during 8,500 inspection raids since January this year.
'About 96 violations were registered against food outlets, which were found violating Law No 8 of 1990 on regulation of human food control. January and April this year witnessed the highest number of closures — 15 and 14 food outlets, respectively, said AlSayed.
About how inspection raids will conducted during Ramadan, he said that there was a routine raid on food outlets.
'The only new thing in Ramadan is that we will keep more focus on outlets which have more demand (pressure) like factories, food distribution points in the Industrial Area and hypermarkets.'
'Any food facility providing meals to more than 200 people at one time will get special treatment because in case of a mistake like poisoning it may harm many people, AlSayed said.
'For Iftar tents, we are coordinating with charity organisations and there are two technical aspects we are monitoring: we have to check the supplier or the restaurant which will cook the Iftar meals; and we have to check about its transportation.'
About electronic inspection, he said that for a month, food inspectors were using digital gadgets during inspection and 'it reflects positively on the work of inspectors either for transparency or the speed with which they inspect more food outlets.'
