QC campaign seeks to fight cholera in Yemen

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Charity (QC) has started finalising a campaign to combat cholera epidemic in Yemen following a call by international organisations that raised the alarm.
The initiative is expected to benefit 40,000 people, QC said in a press statement.
The campaign will focus on providing drinkable water in areas that need it the most, in order to prevent people from using polluted water that results in infections and support health centres to offer treatment and medicine for the affected people, the statement notes. Most health centres have been affected by the Yemeni crisis.
Mohamed al-Kaabi, director of QC's Relief Department, said: 'QC has followed the Yemeni crisis since its beginning and launched emergency relief campaigns and projects in various regions. However, the magnitude of the current crisis is great and our brothers are in danger. International organisations have launched repeated appeals to accelerate the fight against the spreading cholera epidemic in Yemen, which prompted us to launch this campaign. We hope it will benefit 40,000 people.
He appealed to donors to respond quickly to support the campaign, pointing out that 'the suffering increases with every passing day and many lives might unfortunately be lost while they could have been saved if the necessary support was available.
Benefactors in Qatar have been urged to donate for the benefit of their affected brothers in Yemen through certain ‘stocks', QC has said. These are water supply - which is worth QR100, food basket - which is worth QR300, and medical services which is worth QR500. Donations to the campaign can also be made using one of these means: sending a text message with 'YEAV to 92632 to donate QR50 QR, to 92642 to donate QR100 and to 92428 to donate QR500.
People can also donate to the campaign through an e-mail to QC at qcharity.org, via the hotline - 44667711, or through collection points and QC's self-service devices in malls.
The United Nations (UN) has said an estimated 7.6mn people are living in areas vulnerable to the transmission of cholera in Yemen. The UN has also mentioned inadequate sanitation and noted that all displacement places and shelters are at risk of transmission of the disease. Besides, the Red Cross has stressed that 180 people have died of the disease since late April, and the situation requires immediate intervention from international and regional organisations to reduce the risk of the spread of cholera in Yemen.
