Oman- Majlis members question H E Shabibi on inordinate delay in land allotments

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Majlis A'Shura members pressed H E Sheikh Saif al Shabibi, the Minister of Housing on land allotment at the final of a two-day session on Thursday. Members complained that citizens have been waiting for plots since 2008.

Shinas representative Yusuf al Balushi criticised the bureaucracy in the ministry, calling for a reward and punishment scheme for employee performance. Nakhal representative Mohammed al Kindi said there was not enough transparency and that there should be more eServices.

Haima representative Hamooda al Harsousi called for quicker provision of services in areas where new homes are being built.

'We aren't asking for a miracle or the impossible.' H E Shabibi said that priority has been given to those displaced by projects which is expected to be completed soon. Sohar representative Hilal al Sidrani also said new homes offered to residents as compensation for the Batinah Coastal Road project are located too far from services. He also questioned why compensation being offered to citizens differed. The minister said that each affected person is being compensated according to his loss.

H E Shabibi said the authorities assessed the value of land affected by the coastal road project in 2005, and that assessment is still valid. He said there will be more social housing projects in the future and that a committee will be formed to implement them. Members also complained that the ministry's fees are sometimes higher than the actual market value of the land.

They called for the ministry's regional branches to be given more power to complete procedures. They also called for greater land allotment for cultural centres, private schools, Omani Women's Association buildings and private housing developments.
