Ramadan in Morocco to Start on Saturday May 27: Astronomer

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – While the official date of the beginning of Ramadan in Morocco has not been announced yet, an astronomer has predicted that the holy month will start in on Saturday May 27.

Dr. Hicham El Issaoui, who graduated from Dar al-Hadith Husayniya for Higher Islamic Studies in Rabat, told Hespress in a statement that the calculated results of the administrative calendar show that the crescent of the month of Ramadan 1438 AH will be sighted on the evening of Friday, Sha'ban 29, 1438 AH.

El Issaoui stressed that this year's month of Sha'baan will last only 29 days, and according to the calculations of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic affairs, the first day of Ramadan will be on Saturday, May 27.

El Issaoui said that Moroccans will fast for 30 days during Ramadan this year, adding that Eid al-Fitr will take place on Monday, June 26. The crescent of the month of Shawwal will be born on Saturday, June 24 at 2:31 am, the news website reported.

The researcher also pointed out that that according to astrological calculations, Eid al-Adha in Morocco will be on Friday, September 1.

The Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs is the official body monitoring the sighting of the Ramadan moon. The moonsighting is due to take place on Thursday to determine whether the holy month will start on Friday or Saturday.

Ramadan is a time when Muslims across the world fast from sunrise until sunset. Islamic months are dated according to the Islamic lunar calendar. Because of this, determining when a month starts and when it ends is subject to either observing the crescent or relying on a method of calculations.

Morocco is among a number of Muslim countries that rely on a local sighting of the moon by special committees, in line with the Hadith of the prophet (peace be upon Him):Fast when you see the crescent and break the fast when you see it; if it is not apparent, then make the month of Sha'ban thirty days.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world reach into their hearts, spending more time on personal reflection and devotion to God.
