Congressmen to speak on ending Afghan war funding

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): Leading Congressmen are poised to make a pitch prohibiting funds for the US mission in Afghanistan and the importance of debating the the longest war in America€™s history, a news site reported on Wednesday.

Congressmen Walter B. Jones and John Garamendi, along with cosponsors of a resolution, will present their case at a press conference regarding their bill to prohibit funds for activities in Afghanistan.

John Duncan ,Thomas Massie , Don Young and Will Fischer will also be present at the news briefing, scheduled to be held later in the day, according to an anti-war blog.

The bill seeking to end the funding of most operations in Afghanistan and withdraw troops was introduced by a bipartisan coalition led by Pitt County's congressman on March 28.

It allow operations of the US Embassy only for intelligence-gathering and certain case-by-case activities that have designated funding sources and are submitted to Congress for approval.

"After 16 years being in Afghanistan we've spent over $800 billion, we've had over 2,000 Americans killed and about 30,000 wounded," Jones said, while introducing the measure.

"I don't know how many Afghan people have been killed, not the Taliban € they are our enemy € but innocent civilians, and it's time that we either decide are we going to be there any longer or if we've decided 16 years is enough."
