Qatar University and SOAS University of London sign deal

A n international memorandum of understanding was signed between Qatar University and SOAS University of London. The memorandum calls for collaboration in the field of education and research between both universities.

The MoU was signed by QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham and SOAS Director Baroness Valerie Amos CH in the presence of QU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr Hassan Alfadala, QU VP for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Mariam Al Maadeed, SOAS London Middle East Institute Director and Reader in Economics with reference to the Middle East, Dr Hassan Hakimian, QU Scholarships and Partnerships Office Director Cesar Wazen, QU officials, faculty and staff, and SOAS graduates as well as local media representatives.

The two universities aimed at establishing an academic corporation and agreed to initiate collaboration activities in academic areas of mutual interest such as exchange of information in the field of research and the presentation of its results, the exchange of academic materials, publications and other scientific information. The collaboration also includes the exchange of academic and administrative staff and students, as well as the exchange of resources and staff in the area of library and other auxiliary services

Dr Hassan Al Derham, while addressing the ceremony, said the memorandum of understanding will serve to strengthen the collaboration in the field of education and research and will also align with the University's ongoing efforts to build partnerships and strengthen links with local and international institutions to promote academic and research excellence.

'Through this Memorandum of Understanding, Qatar University demonstrates its commitment to engage its faculty and staff on professional development, and to provide its students with opportunities to heighten their skills and to foster their experience, he added.

Baroness Valerie Amos CH briefly mentioned the aspects of the collaboration and expressed optimism for its success. 'Our work at SOAS — across law, social sciences including politics, economics, finance and management law, languages, and the arts and humanities — combines intellectual rigour, research excellence and specialist knowledge informed by our regional expertise. As an institution focusing on the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East with students from over 130 countries and staff from over 90, we are able to bring together a diversity of views.'
