(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Oman has won a bid to host the 2020 UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) Congress and the 2020 World Cancer Leaders Summit in Muscat.

The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) announced on Tuesday that it will sign contract for the prestigious world congress on behalf of its partners and associates within days.

The National Oncology Centre is OCA's partner while its associates are Oman convention Bureau and the Oman Convention and exhibition Centre.

OCA said the bid was awarded to Oman considering a number of positive criteria like global recognition of the work of OCA, especially its active work in International Cancer Prevention Consortium (ICPC), international recognition of the National Oncology Centre at The Royal Hospital, the high standards and modern facilities of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the sultanate being a peaceful and stable country.

UICC is a globally reputed organisation that is registered at the United Nations and represents more than 140 member countries. Its head office is in Geneva. OCA and National Oncology Centre are full members of UICC.

Dr Wahid al Kharusi, president OCA said, 'The congress will be held in October 2020 and we are expecting more than 4,000 participants from across the world in the field of cancer prevention and control. This is also the first time that this event will be held in the Arab world and during this congress the president will be from the Arab world, Princess Diana Merod of Jordan. We dedicate this congress to all the people in the Arab world and we open our arms to all those involved in the field of cancer prevention, control and allied fields in the holistic approach for cancer control.'

Dr Bassim al Bahrani, director of Oncology and the head of Medical Oncology at The Royal Hospital said, 'A lot of knowledge exchange is expected during the congress. We also expect that this will generate income for the country as people visit Oman and this would additionally benefit the tourism sector. If the congress is successful, it will attract more companies to Oman. The important point is that we will be able to identify and address our problems and region's problems at the event. We are also developing a research group which will encourage research and we will benefit from various research projects.'
