ABU DHABI, 10th May, 2017 (WAM) -- The UAE flag was raised on the peak of the famous Atlas Mountains after the success of an adventure team in climbing the peak of Mount Toubkal in Morocco that is 4,167 meters from sea level.

With that, the team succeeded in its big adventure for this season of the programme, organised and supported by the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy.

The team of 10 Emirati girls dedicated its achievement to H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for her patronage in the journey of Emirati women in all areas, especially sports.

The participants headed, along with two supervisors from the academy, to Morocco on 28th April. They then went to a mountain 65km away from Marrakesh, and managed to climb it, and move through the rugged passages of Mount Toubkal.

The trip was an opportunity for them to learn about the environment of Mount Toubkal and contribute to promoting the bonds of co-operation between the members. The team raised the UAE flag on the peak of the highest mountain in North Africa before heading back to Abu Dhabi.

This year's edition of the programme witnessed the participation of 50 Emirati girls in the adventures and challenges series. It included a 15-km walking trip in the Al Wathba desert, a two-day sports camp in Fujairah, two climbing trips to Hata and Negev. Plus, a physical endurance challenge in Zayed Sports City to select 10 girls who would form the biggest adventure team.

They qualified to climb Mount Toubkal on 14th April after scaling Jebel Jais Mountain, the highest peak in the UAE at a height of 1,900 meters.

These adventure programmes seek to achieve a range of goals, among which is encouraging Emirati women to have a sports spirit and promote national loyalty.

The first goal of the programme is highlighting the national identity, as after each challenge they raise the UAE flag to prove that Emirati women are capable of overcoming any obstacle. The programme contributes in putting the country on the world women's sports map.
