Dubai to reduce speed limits on two key highways


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has decided to reduce speed limits on two key Dubai roads, it was announced today.

Speed limits on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road will be reduced from 120 km/hr to 110 km/hr, the authority said. Accordingly, the radar will be reset at 131 km/h.

The decision was taken after a meeting between Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, and Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police.

"It has been agreed to reduce the speed limit from 120 km/h to 110 km/h and reset the radar at 131 km/h, and intensify law enforcement measures to fend off jaywalking. Discussions touched on the parking of heavy vehicles in residential areas, where it was agreed to run joint awareness and enforcement campaigns to intensify the monitoring of trucks and reporting violators," a statement from the RTA said.

"The RTA and Dubai Police are mega government entities in the Government of Dubai and share a portfolio of roles and responsibilities that serve the strategic objectives and goals of the Dubai Government highlighted by secure, safe and smooth transport that adds to people happiness. These regular coordinative meetings offer an important communication channel for discussing new developments especially those relating to enhanced safety of roads & mass transit means for the benefit of citizens and residents of Dubai," said Al Tayer.
