ABU DHABI, 27th March, 2017 (WAM) -- Reem Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, SCMC, has commended the UAE leadership's efforts to promote the rights of women and children and maximise their well-being.

The announcement was made following the Cabinet's decision to adopt the Strategic Plan for the Rights of Children with Disabilities 2017-2021, and the National Strategy for Motherhood and Childhood 2017-2021.

Al Falasi noted that the SCMC prepared the strategic plan based on the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.

"The plan was guided by the principles of human rights and gender equality enshrined in both the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, noting that these conventions emphasised the responsibility of governments to ensure the rights of all children, regardless of gender or disability," said the Secretary-General.

"The National Strategy for Motherhood and Childhood took into account that ensuring the rights of children requires legislation, policies and programmes to promote the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of children and adolescents, in order to guarantee their rights, to protect them from violence and neglect, and to ensure their full participation in society as active and creative individuals," Al Falasi concluded.
