Piraeus, Greece:Greek champions Olympiakos on Thursday appointed Takis Lemonis for a third stint as coach of the league leaders.

The 57-year-old signed for an undisclosed fee and duration after a deal for French coach Remi Garde, who left Aston Villa last year, fell through.

Lemonis previously coached Olympiakos from 2000-2002 and 2006-2008, helping them win four league and a Greek Cup title.

A former midfielder he also played for the Greek club from 1978 to 1987.

His coaching career has seen him manage Cypriot clubs APOEL and Omonia, Greek squads Kallithea, Levadiakos, Xanthi, Panionios and Panetolikos and Saudi Arabian side Al Raed.

Olympiakos have fired three coaches this season with Portugal's Paulo Bento sacked this season after the club equalled their worst record in the league with three straight losses.

Bento lasted only seven months in the job with Portugal's Marco Silva and Spaniard Victor Sanchez also sacked earlier this season.

Olympiakos currently have a six-point lead in the Super League over second place Panionios with five matches left.

They exited the Champions League early and this month were eliminated from the Europa League by Turkey's Besiktas.

The team have advanced to the semi-final of the Greek Cup and face AEK Athens next month.
