Qatar Museums unveils Spring activities


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha:Qatar Museums (QM) yesterday unveiled a rich line-up of events and activities this Spring which include major exhibitions featuring works of celebrated artists from around the world. The exhibitions which will open at various galleries across the country is set to bring new experiences of art, culture and heritage, inspire the next generation of cultural audiences and enrich the lives of all those who live in and visit Qatar.

'As we welcome in the year, we are pleased to present you with an exciting programme full of various cultural, creative, artistic and entertaining activities to appeal to a range of artistic tastes and for everyone to enjoy, from showcasing the best local talent to bringing world class international art to Doha, said Khalid Al Ibrahim, Chief Strategic Planning Officer during a media event at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) yesterday.

Leading the line-up is the Picasso-Giacometti exhibition which will launch on February 22 and run until March 21 at the Fire Station's Garage Gallery. In collaboration with the Musée national Picasso and the Fondation Giacometti, QM will present the first exhibition dedicated to the work of two of the most important artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti. This first-of-its-kind exhibition in the Middle East will bring together more than 120 works by these artists covering paintings, sculptures, sketches, photographs and interviews with the artists.

Globally renowned French artist JR will be the subject of a major retrospective show at QM Gallery in Katara from March 6 to May 31. He is famous for combining art and engaged actions through large-scale outdoor installations, films, photographs and videos, using the streetscape as his canvas and his inspiration.

NYT's Art for Tomorrowconference in March

Award winning photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson will present her series of striking portraits at the Skate Girls of Kabul from June 15 to September 16 at QM Gallery in Katara. This exhibition will tell the extraordinary story of Afghan girls who took up skateboarding, thanks to Skateistan, an Afghan charity that provides skate parks as a hook to get children from disadvantaged families back into the educational system.

The third annual The New York Times 'Art for Tomorrow conference will be returning to Doha in March under the theme of 'Boundaries, Identity and the Public Realm. This conference will examine the role of art as a catalyst for economic growth and development, as well as a mechanism for city or corporate branding.

With discussions led by award-winning New York Times journalists, the four-day conference will bring together more than 200 world-renowned art and cultural influencers from more than 20 countries.
Other speakers at yesterday's event were Ali Al Kubaisi, Archaeology Officer; Khalifa Al Obaidli, Director of Fire Station; Mohammed Nasser Al Othman, Director of Public and International Relations Department; Dr Jelena Trkulja, Director of Education; Laura Barlow, Assistant Curator at Mathaf and Dr Mounia Chekhab Abudaya, Curator at MIA.
